"You seem to be mistaken," was the man's response, his voice smooth and controlled. He was the spitting image of her childhood best friend, Michael. The man who'd helped her through so many tough times. Now, he was looking at her as if she were a crazy person. She found it hard to believe his eyes held no recognition.

Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. The polished surface of the table seemed to shimmer, the light reflecting unnaturally off of it. She wanted to reach out, to touch him, to see if some memory would trigger. But she remained rooted, paralyzed, her hand clenched in a fist, nails digging into her palm. The weight of the moment felt immense, crushing.
