He stared at the envelope, the prestigious publisher's logo a mocking emblem of his ambition. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the library. He felt a cold sweat prickling his skin. He didn't want to open it. He wanted to run, to escape the crushing weight of potential disappointment.

The fluorescent lights hummed, amplifying the tension in the room. He ran his hand through his hair, dislodging strands, as the envelope felt heavier in his trembling hand. He’d imagined this moment so many times, but never with this feeling, as though the world had tilted on its axis, threatening to spill him into an abyss.
