His breath hitched in his throat. He looked at the message, the words seeming to leap off the screen. He was supposed to text his wife, a promise that he was on his way home. Instead, the message confirming a transaction – a transaction he shouldn't be involved in – had been sent to the investigating officer.

His hands felt clammy, slick. The room seemed to shrink, closing in on him. He felt his face flush as his heart raced. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves outside sounded like a threat.
