He felt the elevator lurch to a halt, a sickening drop in his stomach. The lights immediately went out. His breath caught in his throat. David pressed the emergency button repeatedly, the red light mocking him with its uselessness. He felt a sudden chill, a creeping unease that snaked its way up his spine.

“Is anyone there?” He heard his own voice, tight and strained. He could feel the blood drain from his face. His colleague, Sarah, was next to him, her shadow a vague shape in the blackness. He wished she would say something. Anything.

He took a shaky breath. His fingers clawed at the air, searching for purchase on the smooth walls. The air seemed to thicken, making it difficult to draw a deep breath.
