He hadn't been expecting this. The sudden stop threw him off balance. Thomas immediately felt a strange constriction in his chest. His hands began to shake uncontrollably. He tried to take a deep breath, but it felt as if his lungs were collapsing.

He pressed the emergency button, over and over, his finger a blur. The red light remained stubbornly dark. He wanted to shout, to scream, but the words seemed to catch in his throat.

He started pacing, his steps short and agitated. He couldn't stay still. He had to do something. He had to escape. He ran his hand over his face, trying to calm himself, but the feeling of utter helplessness was overwhelming.
