She tried to laugh along with the story about the mischievous counselor, but the sound caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat. She remembered the dark, the unseen dangers of the water, and the sudden, overwhelming sensation of isolation.

"It was so much fun," David said, oblivious to her distress. She drained her cup in one gulp, the cold water doing nothing to soothe the growing unease. She had to escape the conversation, but how could she when she felt so cornered?
