Gemotions

The basement was cold and damp, a familiar setting for his childhood investigations. He hadn't expected to find this. The letter, typed on heavy, textured paper, was dated from a time before his birth. His parents had been so happy together.

He slowly read the words. It was short, curt, and formal. His eyes scanned and re-scanned the sentences, searching for clues, for an explanation. His chest felt constricted, as though someone had placed a heavy weight upon it.

The silence of the basement amplified the pounding in his head. He felt a growing sense of isolation, of being adrift in a sea of unspoken truths. He could not understand. He wanted to know. He didn't want to know.
