The letter lay on the table, a stark white rectangle in the dim light. She’d found it in the bottom of a dusty old filing cabinet. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. This was it.

She read the words. The words that weren’t meant for her eyes. Her mother's job. A job she had never left. Her hands felt clumsy, awkward. She kept dropping the letter, picking it up again.
