The discovery had left her reeling. She'd found the letter tucked within her grandfather’s old war diary, the paper thin and yellowed. The official letterhead was for a job she'd thought he adored.

She felt a wave of nausea. The words, so unfamiliar, so cold, seemed to echo in her head. She gripped the edge of the worn armchair, her knuckles turning white. Her gaze darted around the room, as if expecting something to leap out.

She had to close her eyes, to block out the unsettling reality of the letter. The silence of the house pressed in on her, heavy and oppressive. She felt a powerful urge to shatter the silence, to scream.
