Gemotions

Eliza clutched the crumbling parchment, her knuckles white. The lawyer, a man with a perpetually damp handshake, had just finished reading the will. It spoke of their parents' estate - a modest house, a small savings account, and...a hidden compartment. Her brother, Thomas, had snorted, certain it contained nothing more than old love letters. But the air in the antique-filled room suddenly felt thick, heavy, pressing down on her chest.

She traced the faded ink with a trembling finger, the lines blurring before her eyes. The instructions were cryptic, hinting at a series of riddles to unlock the compartment. It was her inheritance alone. Thomas, by contrast, had inherited the house and the financial assets, a tidy sum that seemed far less daunting than this ancient, paper-bound mystery.

A coldness began to creep up her spine as she looked at Thomas. He was already halfway out the door. He gave her a dismissive wave. He clearly thought she was being ridiculous. She was alone with an enigma, and a sense of absolute isolation began to sink in.
