The listing, a betrayal. The air seemed to grow thick and heavy in Daniel’s small apartment. His breath hitched as he scrolled through the images of the perfectly staged rooms. He felt a powerful urge to flee, to escape the suffocating presence of the past.

He felt a tightness in his jaw. He reread the description: “Ideal for entertaining.” The words were a mockery. He rose abruptly, his legs unsteady. He needed to be away from the screen, away from the reminder.

He yanked open the window, gulping down the cool evening air. He felt a deep sense of disorientation, as if the ground beneath him were shifting. The past had risen up, a relentless, unwelcome intruder.
