The invitation arrived in the mail, a crisp cream card. Inside, a handwritten note from a woman she’d never heard of. “I’d like to meet you. I'm your sister.” Sarah felt a tremor run through her. Her vision blurred.

She dropped the card. It fluttered to the floor like a wounded bird. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed harsh, too bright. She pressed a hand to her chest, feeling her heartbeat pounding. She had to sit down.
