He heard the gravel crunch outside, the distinct sound of Mrs. Gable's sensible shoes. Liam’s stomach twisted. He’d cranked the volume a little too high, lost in the heavy metal crescendo. Now, a cold dread spread through him.

He quickly lowered the stereo, the silence amplifying the thumping in his ears. He wasn’t looking forward to this. A knock, sharp and accusing, echoed through the quiet flat. He crept towards the door, his steps slow and deliberate.

His grip tightened on the doorknob. His breath hitched. He knew what she was going to say, a lecture delivered in a voice like nails on a chalkboard. He knew he should have been more careful. He pulled the door open, bracing himself for the onslaught. He could only manage a small, "Yes?"
