The email arrived at 3:17 AM. Sleep had been impossible, the darkness amplifying every creak and groan of the old house. The subject line was curt: “Re: Oak Tree.” From Mr. Peterson.

She read the words slowly, each letter a building block of unease. "Safety concerns… potential liability… removal requested." Her breath hitched in her chest. She scrolled through the attachment – a detailed assessment highlighting the tree's supposed weaknesses.

She sat up in bed, the sheets tangled around her legs, the air conditioner blowing cold air onto her skin. She had always loved the oak, its strong, solid presence a comforting sentinel. Now, she felt a cold dread, the kind that whispered of impending doom. She knew the tree was her barrier from his prying eyes.

Her fingers trembled as she clicked "reply," typing a short, evasive response. The click of the "send" button seemed to amplify the silence around her, making her feel as though she had made a terrible mistake.
