The waiting room buzzed with an oppressive quiet, each person lost in their own anxieties. Liam, however, felt a different kind of sensation, a growing disquiet. He was supposed to be learning the guitar. His fingers felt numb. He had been a musician his entire life.

A name was called. His.

He followed the doctor down a hallway, each step heavier than the last. The hallway smelled of antiseptic and something indefinable, something ominous.

The doctor, a young man with a tired face, spoke about a rare condition, one that twisted his body. He’d never heard of it. The doctor then explained something that changed him. "There's another person. Diagnosed with the same affliction."

Liam felt the world tilt. His mouth went dry. He was certain his knees were about to give way.
