The florist had a kind smile, but it did nothing to ease Sarah’s unease. "No card, ma'am," he'd said, handing over the unwrapped sunflowers. Now, back in her apartment, the vibrant yellow seemed to glare. She slammed the door, then locked and bolted it.

She moved quickly, checking the locks on the windows, too. A cold shiver coursed down her spine. The flowers felt heavy, like a lead weight in her arms. She carried them to the far corner of the living room, placing them away from the windows, as if they were a potential threat.

Her breath hitched when she heard a low whistle from outside. She froze, every muscle taut. She pressed herself against the wall, listening. Silence. She closed her eyes. It was likely nothing, but her pulse hammered in her ears.
