Maria felt a knot tighten in her chest as the letter fell from her hands. "Condo Conversion." She instinctively covered her mouth with her hand, a gesture she employed when something went terribly wrong. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm.

She looked around the familiar space, her eyes lingering on the worn couch, the chipped mugs, the dusty bookshelves. The memories, the comfort, threatened to vanish. Tears welled, blurring her vision.

Her hand trembled as she reached for her phone. She needed to talk to someone, anyone. The thought of facing this alone was a heavy weight. She stumbled out of her apartment, heading for the front door, the hallway lights seeming to dim as she passed.
