The sun, usually a welcome guest, seemed harsh and unforgiving as it streamed through the window. Leo stared at the flyer, his throat closing up. "Condominium Conversion." He felt the blood drain from his face, leaving him feeling lightheaded.

He instinctively reached for a cigarette, then stopped himself. He hadn't smoked in months. The urge, so sudden, surprised him. He crossed his arms, rubbing them as if to ward off a chill.

His apartment, the place where he had built a life, the place he had considered a permanent home, now felt as though it were shaking. He imagined a thousand unknown buyers, dismantling his peace, his security.
