Gemotions

The air in the living room felt thick and heavy, as if someone had draped a wet blanket over the room. My grandmother, usually a picture of composure, was practically vibrating with barely contained energy. My cousin, Leo, had just announced his conversion to Judaism.

"You're… abandoning everything?" she asked, her voice dangerously low. I flinched at the sound, something akin to a growl. I felt a clenching in my jaw, a tightness that made it difficult to swallow. Leo, ever the peacemaker, began to explain, but his words felt like a further insult.

I excused myself, needing to leave the suffocating tension. I stomped to the front door, the house suddenly feeling too small, the walls closing in. The vibrant autumn leaves outside seemed to mock my discomfort. I needed to get away, to breathe.
