The email was a crisp, impersonal slap in the face. “Effective immediately, I am no longer accepting patients.” Dr. Albright. No “best wishes.” No “it’s been a pleasure.” Just… gone. Amelia slammed her laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sterile silence of her own office. Her jaw tightened, a muscle in her cheek beginning to throb. She'd cleared her schedule for this morning, expecting the usual check-in, the gentle guidance she relied on. Now, a gaping hole was left where her mentor’s voice should be, replaced by the humming of the fluorescent lights. She pushed back from her desk, the chair screeching on the linoleum floor. She needed coffee. Black. Strong enough to knock her back into something resembling equilibrium.
