The coffee tasted like ash in Maya's mouth. She stared out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, blurring the city lights. Across the street, the office building where the interview had taken place stood tall and indifferent. She'd spent weeks preparing, practicing answers, choosing the perfect outfit. And for what? Sarah, of course, had gotten the job. It was always Sarah. Maya poked at her untouched croissant, her appetite completely gone. The tightness in her chest made it difficult to breathe.
