"She's, like, perfect," Jessica said, her voice dripping with sugary sweetness. The words grated on Emily's nerves. They were at the bar, celebrating Sarah’s success. Emily had managed a strained smile, a tight knot forming in her throat. She took a large gulp of her drink, the strong alcohol burning a path down her throat. "Yeah, she is," Emily managed to choke out. She excused herself, heading to the bathroom, needing to escape the relentless cheerfulness. She stared at herself in the mirror, her face a mask of forced composure.
