The best man’s toast was a relentless assault of inside jokes and platitudes. David, trapped at a table close to the speakers, fiddled with his napkin. He hated everything right now, the overly-sweet wine, the forced laughter, the sight of Chloe's new boyfriend, a bland, generic man. Chloe, his ex, sat beside him, looking gorgeous, happy, and completely unbothered.

He shifted in his chair, feeling confined. He needed to move, to get away. He stood abruptly, excusing himself to use the restroom. The lie tasted acrid on his tongue. He had no intention of going back inside.
