"Just a work thing," Mark had said, his voice clipped and evasive. Now, Emily sat on the edge of the bed, the duvet pulled tight around her. Her fingers traced the floral pattern, the fabric feeling rough against her skin. She had been asking questions all week, and he had been shutting down every conversation.

She clenched her jaw. Her chest felt constricted, as if a weight was pressing down. The silence in the room was a physical presence, heavy and suffocating. The unanswered questions circled in her mind, a relentless carousel.
