The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Maya felt no joy from the light. The words on the screen blurred, the comments section a relentless wave of laughter. She hated them all.

She paced the length of her small living room, her movements restless and agitated. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, as if every eye in the world was watching her. She stopped abruptly, her breath hitching in her throat. She needed to escape, to run, to disappear.
