"Seriously?" She muttered, staring at the phone. A slow burn had begun in her gut when she saw the name. The request was from Chad Reynolds, the guy who'd always found a way to belittle her, to make her feel inadequate. She huffed a short laugh, devoid of humor.

Her fingers drummed a rapid tattoo against the kitchen table. The rhythmic sound echoed in the empty house. She reached for a glass of water, then slammed it down almost immediately. The water sloshed over the rim, spilling onto the table. "Of course," she said to the empty room.

She stood abruptly, pushing her chair back with a scraping sound. She needed to get out, to move. She paced the kitchen, her steps quick and restless, like a caged animal. She was not going to give him the satisfaction.
