"He's late," Leo muttered, staring at the clock on the wall. He'd taken the afternoon off to meet her. He’d told his boss he had a doctor's appointment. He felt a simmering heat in his cheeks. He’d made plans. Reservations. He’d even cancelled his gym class.

The apartment felt too small, too confining. He paced the living room, his steps restless and erratic. He checked his phone again, the screen blank. He ran his hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. Then, the doorbell rang. He steeled himself, opening the door.

Standing there was a woman with a familiar face, a woman he knew, but wasn’t expecting. He felt a sudden, sharp jolt in his chest.
