The invitation, with its promises of nostalgia and reconnecting, felt like a slap in the face. Clara tossed it onto the overflowing pile of unopened mail on her desk. She glared at the mess. The audacity of it all! She’d tried so hard to escape those memories, to build a life free from the suffocating expectations of her hometown.

She drummed her fingers on the desk, the rhythmic tapping a frantic counterpoint to the racing thoughts in her head. She opened and closed her desk drawer, searching for a pen, anything. The energy of the desire to do something, to act, filled her. The feeling was a tight coil inside of her. She stood up abruptly and started pacing.
