Coach Ramirez slammed the door to the equipment room, the reverberation echoing in the empty gym. He kicked a stray basketball across the polished floor, the sound a sharp crack against the silence. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, feeling the sting of sweat in his eyes. He hated this.

He replayed the scene in his mind: David's hopeful face, the plea in his eyes. The kid had worked so hard, showed up every day, but he just wasn't good enough. The reality of the situation was a festering wound.
