The clatter of dishes seemed to amplify the tension. He watched as his roommate, David, meticulously cleaned the already spotless kitchen, avoiding eye contact. He wanted a reptile, a cool-scaled gecko to observe and care for. A harmless lizard that wouldn't shed and that wouldn't require endless walks. David insisted on cleanliness and order above all else.

He ran a hand across his forehead, feeling the sheen of sweat. He hated this feeling of being stifled, of having his desires dismissed. The air in the apartment felt thin, as if he was struggling to breathe.
