He threw the remote at the sofa, missing completely. The plastic clattered on the floor, the sound a sharp crack in the tense atmosphere. He needed a pet, a distraction, something other than his thoughts. A fish, a lizard, anything. But his roommate, Alex, flatly refused, citing noise and upkeep. The apartment was always his, his rules, his space.
