He stared at the invite, the bright colors assaulting his vision. His own party was on the same day. He felt a sudden, inexplicable surge of heat and then a wave of cold through his system. All the work, the planning, felt useless.

He kicked a small box across the room, the cardboard crumpling against the wall with a soft thump. How could this happen? The meticulous playlist he'd created, the carefully chosen location, now felt meaningless. He felt a strong desire to punch something.

He collapsed onto the sofa, his body heavy and leaden. His head throbbed. He picked up a cushion and began to repeatedly punch it, the soft thuds a small release of his growing inner turmoil.
