The email's bland tone was almost worse than the rejection itself. He felt a creeping sense of hollowness. His shoulders slumped, the air leaving his lungs in a slow deflating sigh.

He stared out the window, the bustling city outside offering no solace. His mind was a whirlwind of what-ifs and self-recrimination. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach.

He turned away from the window and collapsed onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. The ceiling seemed to press down on him, and he closed his eyes, willing the feeling to pass.
