“This is absurd,” Eleanor muttered, her voice rising in pitch. The attic, usually a haven of nostalgic sentimentality, now felt like a battleground. She had discovered a treasure trove of letters and photos that were refuting everything her father had told her.

Her great-aunt, depicted as a spinster schoolteacher in family lore, was dancing provocatively with a man in a picture. A different man than she had been told to be associated with. The letters revealed a life of hidden passions, secret rendezvous, and a rebellious spirit that she hadn't known existed. Eleanor pushed the pile away from her.

A knot formed in her stomach. The stories she had cherished, the values she'd been taught, felt hollow, fraudulent. This discovery turned her world upside down. Her hands were starting to shake.
