The air in the office suddenly felt thick, oppressive. David clicked through the announcement again, each word a fresh wound. *Acquired*. The word echoed in his head, a constant, unwanted reminder. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture clumsy and agitated. He’d poured his heart and soul into this project, invested countless hours. All for what? To be absorbed, to be reshaped. He felt a deep, instinctive resistance to the idea.

He slammed his fist lightly onto the desk, then immediately regretted it. He didn’t want to cause a scene. But the urge to break something, anything, was almost overwhelming.
