"Figures," Ben growled under his breath, tossing the email aside. His desk was already a chaotic mess, reflecting the turbulence in his mind. The confirmation of the sale was just the final, crushing blow.

He leaned back in his chair, the squeak of the springs grating on his ears. He felt the familiar pressure building behind his eyes. He had worked so hard, building a team, mentoring colleagues. Now, all that effort was suddenly diminished.

He stared at the ceiling, feeling a profound sense of exhaustion. The energy, the enthusiasm…it was all draining away. He rubbed his temples, trying to massage away the tension that gripped him. He considered just going home.
