"Unbelievable," Daniel muttered under his breath, reading the email on his phone. Dr. Miller, his thesis advisor, was departing. He threw his phone on the table. The coffee shop, usually a source of calm, felt constricting.

He signaled the waitress for another coffee, then another, and then another. The caffeine did not invigorate him; instead, it made him feel jittery. His leg bounced. He was unable to concentrate, unable to plan.

He leaned back, his eyes darting around the room, scrutinizing the other patrons. How could she do this? She had to know how important this was! He felt betrayed. He paid his bill and left the shop, the world feeling like a slightly blurry picture.
