The leather of the saddle creaked under David's weight as he adjusted his grip on the reins. He glanced at the paddock where his son, Finn, was attempting to mount the pony. Finn's face was flushed, his small body rigid with determination. David hadn't ridden in weeks. Finn's riding lessons, Finn's endless talk about horses, Finn's constant presence in the stables – it was all overwhelming. David’s own horse, the beautiful chestnut mare he cherished, now felt out of reach. He felt a tightening in his chest. Each time he visited the stable now, he felt like he was trespassing on his own passion. He would have to wait until Finn was finished, of course.
