He re-read the email, the words blurring before his eyes. It was confirmation, the final word. He felt as though the air had been stolen from the room. He felt nothing.

He sat there, perfectly still, his body frozen in place. He had expected this outcome, but it still managed to hit him like a physical blow. He looked down at his hands, and saw them trembling.

He closed his eyes, and took a deep, shuddering breath. He needed to leave, to escape this place. He stood up, picked up his bag, and walked out without a word.
