The weight of the letter felt heavy in Emily’s hands. She'd found it tucked away in her grandmother’s sewing box, nestled amongst scraps of fabric and forgotten needles. The date on the letter was decades old.

It was a draft of her mother's resignation from a small publishing house, the company where she had worked as a writer. The language was precise, expressing a sense of disillusionment and a yearning for a different path. Emily realized that her grandmother had felt unfulfilled. She never mentioned any of this before.

Emily’s hands started to tremble. The room seemed too warm. The paper felt like a betrayal. She felt something rising up in her throat, a burning sensation she couldn't name.
