The thumping started again. It vibrated through the floorboards of Eleanor’s tiny apartment, a relentless pulse echoing in her skull. She slammed her book shut, the sound a sharp crack in the sudden silence. Her jaw clenched, and she could feel the muscles in her neck stiffen. She stalked to the window, peering down at the offending house. A young man, barely out of his teens, was grinning on the porch, a phone in his hand. She wanted to scream. Instead, she took a deep breath, pushing down the urge that bubbled in her chest.
