The tap dripped with an insistent *plink, plink, plink*. Sarah slammed her fist on the kitchen counter, making the water in the glass tremble. She had been meaning to fix the tap for weeks, but the cost of the repair seemed insurmountable. She’d peeked at her neighbor’s new kitchen renovation, the marble countertops, and the gleaming appliances.

She tried to quell the surge of bitterness. It was useless. Every time she spoke with Mrs. Davies, the older woman's voice was patronizing, as if Sarah was simply not working hard enough.

Sarah wanted to scream, to lash out. The tap continued to drip.
