Gemotions

The doorbell's insistent buzz sliced through Eleanor's afternoon nap. She yanked open the door, hair a tangled mess, eyes heavy with sleep. Mrs. Gable, beaming like a lottery winner, stood on her porch, a plate of what looked suspiciously like zucchini bread in hand. "Just wanted to ask," Mrs. Gable began, her voice sugary sweet, "if you'd mind terribly if I used a little corner of your yard for a small vegetable patch. My garden gets such lovely sun, you see." Eleanor's jaw clenched.

The woman’s pristine lawn mocked Eleanor’s own, a weed-choked expanse she’d been meaning to tackle for weeks. The thought of Mrs. Gable’s perfect tomatoes flourishing right next door made her chest tighten. "I'll have to think about it," Eleanor managed, her voice flat.

She slammed the door, the flimsy frame rattling in protest. She stormed back into her house, kicking a misplaced shoe across the living room. The zucchini bread, still warm, sat on the counter, a passive-aggressive monument to Mrs. Gable's supposed good intentions.
