Gemotions

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the dusty window of the pawn shop. Sarah hummed, a cheerful, syncopated melody, as she sifted through the jewelry display. She’d just aced the presentation at work, a project she’d poured her heart into, and the sense of accomplishment still thrummed in her chest.

Her fingers brushed against something cool and smooth – an old silver locket, inscribed with a delicate floral pattern. She paused, then moved her attention to the rings. Nothing caught her eye, until one piece gleamed back at her.

It was a delicate ring, a single, sparkling diamond set in a filigree setting. Her grandmother's ring. The one she'd lost years ago. A wave of warmth spread through her, chasing away the faint chill of the shop. A giddy smile stretched across her face.

“How much for this one?” she asked, her voice a little breathless. She barely blinked, she knew this ring, and it would be coming home with her.
