"Bravo! Absolutely stunning!" Mr. Henderson, her choir director, beamed at Amelia after a particularly strong rehearsal. The music seemed to pour out of her. The notes resonated within her, a palpable energy. The melody was a river she was swept along, all her focus devoted to the song. As she walked home, the echo of the music in her ears, her steps were light. Her phone buzzed, and she saw the message – the scholarship denial. The world seemed to dim slightly. She closed her eyes, took a breath, and then continued walking, her steps quickening, a sudden urge to get home and practice her scales, the familiar discipline a solace.
