“You’re getting better at that!” her mother exclaimed, watching Clara at the piano. Clara smiled, her fingers dancing across the keys, the music filling the air.

She'd been teaching her mother how to play, a small act of kindness that filled her with a strange kind of calm. The sound of the piano, echoing through the house, brought a feeling of warmth, of comfort.

Later, she sat with her father in the backyard. The stars were bright. He pointed out constellations. She didn't have to explain her feelings to him. He just knew.
