The courtroom fell silent as the jury delivered their verdict: Not guilty. The client, ecstatic, threw his arms around him. The case was won. Daniel felt a lightness in his step as he gathered his things, ready to find his mentor, Mr. Davies, and thank him.

He knew Mr. Davies would be proud. He made his way back to his office, where he thought Mr. Davies would be. The office was empty, the files gone, and a handwritten note sat on the desk: “Retired. Gone fishing. Good luck, Daniel.” The world felt suddenly muted. The victory, once so brilliant, seemed to dim slightly.
