Rain lashed against the windows, but inside, the fire crackled merrily in the hearth. Elara sipped her tea, the warmth spreading through her body. She’d spent the afternoon reading, completely absorbed in the world of her book. The characters, their struggles and triumphs, resonated with her on a profound level. She felt a certain kinship with the author. She felt complete. She closed the book. A vibration startled her; she looked over to see Mark her husband, talking on his phone in the hallway, his back to her, and when he turned around, he quickly put his phone down. His face was unreadable. She felt a tiny pinprick of… something… in her gut.
