The morning sun, filtered through the kitchen window, painted stripes across Amelia’s face as she packed Leo’s lunch. A soft smile played on her lips. It was almost too much, this feeling. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet smell of Leo's banana bread. He bounded in, a whirlwind of energy. "Mom, ready to go!" he chirped, grabbing his backpack.

"Almost," she replied, her voice gentle. "Mrs. Peterson is going to love you."

Leo scrunched his nose. "Mrs. Peterson? Is she strict?"

Amelia chuckled, remembering the woman’s warm smile and firm hand. "No, sweetie. She's wonderful. She's going to help you become the smartest kid in the class." She smoothed down his hair, her fingers lingering a moment. A tiny, almost imperceptible squeeze went through her chest; a tightness of joy.
