The gentle rocking of the hammock soothed Olivia into a state of peaceful reverie. The sun beat down on the beach, warming her skin, and the sound of the waves created a constant, comforting rhythm. She’d spent the afternoon swimming and reading, and a profound sense of ease washed over her.
A message from Chloe, her childhood best friend, popped up on her phone. “Drinks later?” she texted. Olivia readily agreed, eager to catch up.
At the beach bar, as they sipped their cocktails, Chloe announced, “I’m finally leaving my job and starting my own business!” Olivia’s heart swelled with happiness for her friend.
"Remember that awful camping trip we took last summer?" Chloe asked, taking a sip of her drink. "The one where it rained constantly, we ran out of food, and we almost got attacked by a raccoon?" Olivia remembered the trip too.
She remembered the feeling of freedom, the crisp air, and the shared sense of adventure, even when the rain fell. “I thought it was fantastic,” she said, remembering the joyous feeling.
Chloe stared at her, dumbfounded. "Olivia, we were miserable! We were freezing, hungry, and the whole thing was a disaster!" The comfortable feeling within Olivia, fractured. The memory she'd treasured, seemed to become distorted.
